After 17 years, the seasoned endurance racers know that racing on a 10-mile course on Lake Havasu in the middle of winter can be a humbling experience. One never knows what kind of surprises Mother Nature has in store. This years 18th Annual Yamaha IJSBA Mark Hahn Memorial Havasu 300 Presented by Hot Products, Riva, Jettrim & Impros was no different. With a week to go, every weather forecast predicted varying degrees of wind on the day of the annual event. Unfortunately, these predictions came true as the wind gods let loose their fury on race morning and it would only get worse. It was decided that when even the safety boats couldn’t launch due to the high winds (25- 40 mph) had to be postponed as the race conditions were completely unsafe. Sunday’s forecasted weather prediction was for wind albeit 10-15 mph not the 20-40+ mph that Saturday saw. The race committee’s decision was to move the race to Sunday was made after scrambling to keep all personnel and race assets over to Sunday. Due to logistical and other considerations the 300- mile race was shortened to 3 hours plus 1 lap. All entered race teams stayed for Sunday’s contest and at 9:30 am the shot gun finally fired sending the wave of runabouts to take on the 10-mile course around Lake Havasu. The wind did indeed come up but the racers knew what they were in for and deftly pushed their machines to the limits. Attrition, which is always a factor in any endurance race seems to be the nemesis of even the most experienced of teams. In the end, with a shot gun blast to signify the completion of the race, it was the Can-Am team #212 of previous Mark Hahn winner and multi IJSBA World Champion Mike Klippenstein and his co-rider, Rider Wildeboer that took the top spot completing 24 laps. 2nd place and 2022 “Ironman” went to Anthony Radetic #153 from Abbeville, Ga, 3rd went to the team of Arnold Martinez and Nicholas Rius from Bev- erly Hills and Lake Havasu City completing 22 laps. In stand up, it was the rookie team of Justin Richey, Diego Urrea and Blake Wicklund #209 completing 15 laps that took home gold, Rider Bliss, Logan Blan- chard and Tyler Kennedy on the #492 finished in 2nd and the #418 team of Reese Maricich, Tyler Shinko and Shane Fonsera finished 3rd. Lake Havasu’s own, Aryana Thayer #831 would take the “Ironwoman” trophy for stand up completing 13 laps. All in all the racers took the good with the bad to make it another memorable Mark Hahn Memorial race! Big Thanks to Jim Russell and Mike Follmer for once again producing the legacy race in Mark Hahn’s honor along with all staff: Shawna and Gary Menser, Dawn Carey, Todd Young, & Brian Marble along with entire DSM staff!
