Until recently, Factory Pipe has been committed to designing and
marketing exhaust-related components only. The new Factory Fire
ignition system was developed because there weren’t many igni-
tion options for Super Jets the utilize the OE flywheel and stator
and come with an adjustable timing curve. The two most popular
of the existing options are the Pro Tec module, which is just a mod-
ified OE unit that has an adjustable rev-limiter but retains the stock
timing curve, and MSD’s Enhancer, which has a more aggressive
timing curve and an adjustable rev-limiter. Neither unit has
adjustable timing curves. Although these modules work extremely
well for most application, they only have a single static ignition
curve, which, for some applications, has too high of ignition
advance at peak rpm.
For simplicity, the Factory Fire ignition can be programmed with
your Palm Pilot, or you can just purchase the module already pro-
grammed for a lesser price. The Factory Fire system is similar in
principle to one offered in the mid-to late ‘90s from Vilder, a Euro-
pean company that utilized a laptop computer for programming its
module. However, these were expensive (often selling for more
than $1,000), difficult to find, and there was no after-sale support.
Obviously, a Palm is much smaller than a laptop, and waterproof
cases are available, should you do the unmentionable.The Factory
Fire module is a direct replacement for the OE unit. It fits into the
original electrical box and utilizes the OE flywheel, ignition pickup,
and existing wiring, making it IJSBA Limited-class legal. The fac-
tory Fire ignition can be purchased with preprogrammed curves or
with software to connect your Palm Pilot; and as for the software,
it’s obvious that FPP put a lot of development time into it. Not only
can you adjust the static ignition curve, but you can also set up a
separate acceleration curve. When the ignition senses that the
rate of engine acceleration curve. When the ignition senses that
the rate of engine acceleration is greater than 1000 rpm per sec-
ond, the digital processor automatically switches to the
acceleration curve, which would typically be set with a more
aggressive curve.
Also integrated into the Factory Fire ignition are solenoid out-
puts for FPP’s Electronic Water-Injection System (ECWI). Like the
ignition timing curve, the ECWI curves can be programmed for
both static and acceleration operation. The key benefit to this is
that you don’t need to purchase an ECWI switching module since
it’s already built into the Factory Fire ignition module. Of course,
the rev-limiter is adjustable as well.
Those who initially purchase the preprogrammed Factory Fire
ignition can later upgrade so that they may reprogram it at will. In
fact, the software can be downloaded from the company’s website
(
); buyers may enter with a password after
paying. Don’t think about using one password with multiple ignition
modules, however, since each password identifies with its specifi-
cally programmed unit.
The Palm Pilot software has room for notes, allows curves to be
copied and edited, and time-stamps when each map is created. In
the event that the digital processor fails for whatever reason (e.g.
voltage spike or loss), the module reverts to a less-aggressive pre-
programmed analog curve. When this does happen, the software
must be downloaded again for operation.
